Drew Had Surgery

My Lab Drew became very ill this weekend. She was not interested in eating on Thursday. Friday morning she was in major distress. I rushed to an emergency vet and they diagnosed her with Pyrometra. We were lucky she had the open type.

She had to have surgery. Not at the emergency clinic. They wanted $3400
to have her spayed. Golly Gee!

We have her home and she is recovering. Now we have to keep a VERY VERY active Lab
quiet !

I believe it is a bacterial infection in the uterus of a female dog.

Pyrometra is an infection of the uterus. The uterus will swell and fill with pus. In Closed Pyrometra the cervix is closed. This causes the uterus to fill up like a balloon. If not caught in time, the infection leaks into the abdomen. This causes septic shock and even death.
In the open type, the cervix opens allowing the infection to drain.
Treatment is to have the dog spayed and antibiotics.

They don't know why some dogs get this infection. It usually happens 4-6 weeks after the end of a heat cycle. Drew became ill 4 weeks after her cycle.

Now she will rest and take it easy. She should be ok to jump at Premeire. A Round of Applause!
