There is a UKC hunt test this weekend in Fenwick, MI. It all starts Saturday at 7:00 am. If you would like to come or would like more information contact us or go to www.GLHRC.com.

Hey Thom,

You should talk to Beth and Jeff... they have started one already, I believe. Granted, it seems predominantly centered around GSPs... but I believe they have expanded it out to all pointing breeds. I might be incorrect, though... you'll have to ask.

We have tried to get one going with UKC but there is such a LACK of interest. It sucks...... Plus now that I have Kiddo home it is next to impossible for me to run and no one else will step up to help. So it has kind of been put on the back burner. Thanks for thinking of us Kel!

I have thought about getting something together on this side of the state.....I hear ya about time. I will admit with all the different hunting clubs out there it might be tuff to get one going. Plus the lack of local UKC judges to help hold an event. I bet it wont be easy getting a pointer club/program off the ground in MI.

Some do but they are way out in Colorado. We are going to get Sky's Upland as well, but we are waiting for the Michigan Club to offer the tests later this year.

So in short none of the events we have been to have had the upland yet.

You should take Bo to some HRC tests and get his Started Hunting Retriever title. It would probably be pretty easy for Bo, there were two Shorthairs that competed and passed Saturday.

Its pretty simple for the first title or the SHR. Bo must be steady at the retrieving line and you will use a duck call to say your ready the bird will be launched and shot. The only disqualifier really is if Bo breaks or retrieves the bird before you release him. But the nice thing in started is you can place your hand on the dog to steady them. The longest retrieve we have seen was 74 yards so it is not all that far, considering in the next level retrieves are up to 100 yds. And Bo will pass as long as he brings the bird within one average stride or one step for you and he does not take too long in retrieving meaning he isn't off smelling the decoys for an hour.
Water is simple it is under 70 yds for each retrieve. And is through grass and weeds but typically the dog can see the bird splash down.

But, the only way I think Bo would struggle is if he is not steady to shot from 12 gauge poppers than I would be worried. But besides that he should do fine.

He will struggle waiting at the line. He is steady on point to wing and sometimes shot but Patience isnt one of his strong points lol. But I can work on that.
