weight pull fun show

Hello everyone just wanted to let you know about a weightpull funshow. The show is being put on by The American bulldog Club. The show is gonna be at
K9 Specialty

Warren,Mi
The date is April 19,20th.
Weigh in is at 9 am and 11am is pull time. It is 15.00 for the first dog and 10.00 for every dog after. If you have any question you can call Stacey at 313-282-4213 or Charles at 313-475-0589. Bring a crate for your dogs and a cooler with beverages. Maybe a tent depending on the weather. They pull on the cement with indoor/outdoor carpet,and they have a cart,its not on a track. Its always a good time and good practice for the dogs.

Will they let those of us who have never done it try it out?

This will be at K-9 Specialties, the pet store, huh? Cool.

You mentioned it will be on cement... so I'm assuming the pull will be in the parking lot... yes?

Also, since this is a fun-pull, we can use treats/toys... correct? (as long as we're not making a mess with any treats, of course)

I have to work Saturday morning... but we'll definitely be there Sunday!

Most fun pulls still go by normal rules, all the ones I have been to anyway.
I also would not recommend using bait for training. It can become a hard problem to fix. A dog should learn to pull for you, When you use a toy than you are kicking in prey drive than teaching the dog to actually work. This is just my opinion

Yes anyone can come out and try. No bait allowed!! They have a novice division and you get 5 pulls and can leave the leash on.

I don't use it as "bait," really. I'm not a fan of luring in general in most cases. I use it as a reward at the end of the chute. It just makes it easier to reward right away, rather than waiting until after they are unhitched, walked back to the crating area, etc.

When I use toys for any training (wpull included) the toy doesn't come out until they are done with whatever task it is they're performing. The only exception would be in newly introduced tasks... like, if they were first learning to pull... and hesitant to start the load (light though it may still be), I would likely reward any forward motion at all if need be. But, otherwise, the toy is hidden. Sure, I doubt they don't already know when it's there or not... but I prefer to have it on hand within easy access when training for sports they are new to. And, since Aro isn't back to optimal condition yet, I would only be bringing my "newbies" along... Jack Tar and Baako.

Eventually, of course, the sport itself becomes its own reward.

I don't use food for most any training unless it's low-key. My boys just get too psyched about toys to maintain the *calm* focus needed for low-key task learning. It's also way cheaper to replace a toy every so often rather than buy treats over and over for several big dogs!

K9 Specialities has some great deals on toys. Whenever we are back in the Det area we stock up. Make sure you stop in the store if you go. Don't let the stores inside appearance fool you, it's like a warehouse type setting. There are some great deals!

Definitely second Jillian's comment! FYI, though... they're closed on Sundays... so if you want to shop, be sure ot go Saturday.

Will anyone be there to help new teams out? Rocky has a harness, but hasn't had a chance to pull a sled (go figure).

Everyone is so friendly and helpful and I will be there.

Do they have harnesses for people to try?

I'll bring a few spare harnesses with me on Sunday if people want to borrow them. I have a couple that will fit medium Lab size dogs (and maybe Bo?) and some larger ones.

What are the hours for the pull on Saturday and Sunday? We're hoping to make it up one of the days. Thanks

It's in the first post... 9am weigh in/registration and 11am is the pull. Usually, unless there is a huge turnout, the pulls are done by early afternoon.

we just got back from the pull. Rocky had a good time. There are some HUGE bully's out there. Rocky pulled 756 lbs. Not bad for a sporting dog who had 3 hrs of UV practice last night. We are very proud of him. Anna and Heather's dogs did good too. It was cool to see how much some of those dogs could pull.

I am so glad that you all came out today!!! Rocky and Colby kicked some Lab butt!!!!!!

WOW!! That was fun. Someone actually asked me what breed of dog I had!!!! Not like dock jumping. We had a blast. I am soo proud of my lab keeping up with the bullies!! Jason got some great shots today I am sure (that must be why Kristy keeps him around!! lol) It was great seeing you guys today and good luck tomorrow.

Jason got some good pictures. That is one of the reasons I keep him around, along poop scooping I can definitely say that Colby and Rocky were the best weight-pulling labs there. Of course, they were the only ones

They are the best in our own minds!!!! They held their own today thats for sure. Not bad for a coulple of first timers. I would love to try that again if there is another event close.

I agree Anna. I am just proud that they tried it and pulled it! For never having been hooked up to a cart, they were GREAT!

Brie tried and moved the empty cart but not the full distance to count. I think she just needs to try again. She will get it. She cant understand why I want her to pull when I say NO PULL like 10 times a day!!! But she was having fun and her tail was wagging the whole time!
