Lure Coursing Empty Lure Coursing

Post by LynnSWD Sat Mar 13, 2010 8:12 pm

Had a fun weekend.......went to a conformation show in Kzoo and along with that, the Sight Hound Group was holding a Lure Coursing Competition....after their competition was over all other breeds could try out the (full) course. Lola was in heaven. I told her the white cloth/bag was a squirel and she went crazy! The sight hound people said they saw her smile as she was running the course Lure Coursing 67730 .
It was a lot of fun to see her having fun. I have tried many different 'sports' with her, but none of them clicked like this did. I am excited!!!!!!!!!!! Lure Coursing 575778

I'll put it this way Jeff!! You know how some dogs go crazy while standing in line for dock jumping - all barking and pulling cuz they are excited?? Well that was Lola x 3 out by the Lure Course. It was all I coulud do to hold her back. Plus it was rainy and cold....may be next time. Lure Coursing 97505

It was a blast!!! Lola did awesome, I've never seen her so excited! Oskar came more unglued than he does for dock jumping. Carly acted like she didn't care until she went and she shot after it like a bullet. Then she was smarter than the course, in the middle it went in a big square and she waited for it to come back to her LOL!

It's definitely a fun sport and I hope it keeps growing as an all-breed sport!

Annie I'm not sure how long it was, it took up the whole infield at the grandstands at the Kzoo fairgrounds if that helps?

Sounds like it would be fun to watch. I think I'm too afraid to let the mutts try it though because I can just picture myself in the middle of a race....and then a stray plastic bag would blow across the trail and my entire team would lose their minds all at once Lure Coursing 285524

We want to get Harley (our non-jumper) into Lure. The problem is I can't find any coarse around my area in NY. He tried it down at Fido Fest last year and loved it.

Lynn that is Belle ALL THE WAY!!!!

She becomes OCD when it comes to lure coursing. I was at Mutt Strutt a couple years ago, there was a generator for power, someone dropped a poop bag. Belle was READY TO GO!!!! Same thing happened at an agility trial.

At Mutt Strutt there is supposed to be a "lure course" of sorts called Lure D'Jour. I know Belle will like playing but she likes the BIG course she ran at the Premier much better. The sight hound people after Belle's run were "wow that is a nice lab!"

Now if I can only figure out how to rig it on the dock maybe we could get her to jump again. LOL

Annie - my guess is that the dogs were running for a good 20-30 seconds......it was a full competition course.

Ann - Lola has broken the screen in my front windows trying to get at the squirrels in the yard......I told her that the lure was a squirrel and she went mad!! LOL It was fun. I have created a monster. This is something I will do with her -

Lure Coursing Empty Re: Lure Coursing

At Bark in the Park two years ago, they had lure courses set up. Belle ran so hard down the first line after that darn bag, she was unable to maneuver the hard right turn, she hit the snow fence that made up the course area (there were two courses) and popped out the other side. It didn't hold my solid lab! LOL She was desperately trying to figure out how to get back in. I was on the other side of the ring from her. I was worried she would try to jump in just as someone lifted the fence for her and she was back on course! Then the lure died. Poor Belle. She did 2 more runs that day. She got better with each run working the lure like a sight hound.

I wish some of the UAD folks could see her run. Some have never seen Belle go that fast LOL

Lol... I had that same thought when you asked about it, actually.

I wonder how fast/far all these dogs would go if we sent a lure down the dock? Maybe rig something up that flings it into the air at the end? Just kidding! Snickering

When Oskar caught the bag at the end, he dropped it immediately like 'What the he!!' and then continued searching frantically in the area for the real animal! It was hilarious!

That's what Aro did when we tried it with him at an event several years ago (the course went through a mini-agility setup). He realized it was just a plastic bag right out the gate and then had no interest in anything but the jumps/tunnel/A-frame. Just kidding! Now, if we had attached a TOY to it, he would likely have been all for it.

One thing I've always wondered, though... why a plastic bag? I know some groups sometimes use white cloth, though, which makes more sense to me considering how many times I've seen dogs catch the lure. It just seems the cloth lures would be so much safer. Maybe if this becomes an official UKC sport, UKC will require the lure to be cloth?

They had it at Mutt Strutt this weekend and I know a lot of us tried it out. It was so much fun!! I brought Brooks over and at first he could have cared less and then we sat in front for about 15 mins and he kept seeing the lure go by and finally got all excited and barked and pulled the whole time. I thought great - this will be like jumping where he freaks out watching but not so much during his turn but I was wrong! He shot after it like a bat out of hell!! So much fun to see him do it and can't wait to have him do it again!!

We let Leo try it and it was AWSOME! The big guy tore after that lure as fast as Rocky did. He was really running which we've never seen in the 2 years we've had him... The owner of the lure equipment thought it was so great that he let Leo have a free run! Leo did skip most of the obstacles though and even jumped OVER the tunnel. It was much too small for him to even think about running thru it.

There was a lure course at the Mutt Strut called the Doggie Dash De Lure. Wilma went crazy over it! If she could follow that "rabbit" into the pool, I bet she'd actually dive!

Go Leo! They should use that first pic in their advertisement.

Miss Dusty had a blast. She managed to avoid most of the obstacles and make her way through the fence to find the varmint at the end.

I tried using a squeaky toy to get her out of there and she didn't even pay attention to that. She goes crazy for squeakies.

Apparently a fake varmint on the lure course is now her favorite toy.

Interesting... May make it worth getting Leo his UKC number if there events closer to us. We are a little leary of having Rocky do it too much at his age but I would like to have something Leo can get involved in besides guarding his stuffed animals on the deck...
