Sunday disc clinics Empty Sunday disc clinics

Post by Sara Tue Mar 18, 2008 10:36 pm

Ron and Apryl, who are HUGE in the disc world, (both were in IDC last year) are hosting their weekly disc training clinics again starting this sunday. It's a sort of drop-in clinic, where you can come hang out and play and learn with your dogs. Ron and Apryl are AWESOME and so much fun to hang out with, and amazing teachers. I've learned so much from them. I'll be going with the turd, to do her thing that she is not a turd at Oops! and get ready for some competitions!

Here's their site if anyone's interested:
www.pawsitivevybe.com
also:
k9disc.com

The clinics are $10, which is nothing for how much you will learn and how much fun you'll have. Disc is a GREAT way to keep your dog in shape and also to really gain a connection with your dog---it's one way I've kept Oskar in shape this winter, he'll be a pretty good toss and fetch dog---you don't have to do freestyle to play in disc!

Just want to second the praise for Ron and Apryl! Both are great people and very knowledgable when ti comes to training and behavior. They also employ a very positive, motivational teaching and training style. Sweet!

I may have to drive out to GR for a weekend here and there for some practice time. Just kidding!

They have a GREAT place now Kel---they're out in the country with lots of open land and they also have an indoor studio. Pretty cool!

Is there a minimum age you guys would recomend for starting a dog in disc? Tundra is very disc savy and I would love to see her get involved. I just wouldn't want to push her too soon!

She's over a year right? Plus she's small and light, and probably pretty much developed bone wise. Just take it slow, and honestly the most important thing is YOU. Disc placement is everything, especially if you have a super disc driven dog, like Carly. Ron and Apryl have helped me so much with learning to throw better, they're really great at that.

And Kel is right, they are big proponents of positive training. Not only with the dogs, but with the people!! I don't work well with critical harsh trainers, it makes me so tense I mess up---with everything from horseback riding to music lessons I have always done MUCH better with positive trainers. Both Ron and Apryl are so laid back and they get you so relaxed you forget you're being watched.

Thanks Sara. Yeah she is over a year. I was thinking about starting agility as well this year. I would have to convince Jeff to do the disc thing as he loves playing with the frisbee with her! We will see!

I swear that when I read this, I read it as "I don't work well with others".

Sara's right... disc placement is all important! Ron will stress that a lot too... especially after having worked with dogs like Leilonni for so long (his "danger dog" as he often calls her)!

Especially with a younger dog, you want to be certain to not have them vaulting all over the place. So, just take it slow and save the big, flashy jumps for a little later when they're fully developed and have all their muscle tone. Sweet!

Being so light and lean, Tundra should have a very nice build for the sport. I'm sure you'll both have lots of fun with it!
