I'm sure I've asked before, but I've had a REALLY hard time finding disc events. Maybe I started looking too late in the season? Our first event was up in Flint for the charity thing. I assumed that I could look in Dog World, etc. and find some more....just like any other dog event on the planet, but I seem to be S.O.L. Is the disc season over? (probably Oops! ) When does it start again? Where do I look to find events? Are there typically enough in MI to keep everyone occupied? Just wondering. Even if I have to wait until next summer/fall, I want to plan ahead. Thanks!

Annie, a good place to look is on the disc board, k9disc.com/speak. Also alot of the events in Michigan are unfortunately Skyhoundz, but you can always check their site for what they call 'local events,' which are what most of the events are in Michigan. They are pretty much done for the season too.

No I just don't like their format. If you compete freestyle you also have to do toss and fetch. So, you could have a really crappy freestyle dog but win b/c of toss and fetch. I think they are two totally different events and you should be able to do one or the other. Carly's been doing a lot of shutting down at disc and I did not enter her at these events this summer b/c I would prefer to only do freestyle and do close work with her.

I just think it's kinda dumb to require entering both. It would be cool to have an overall dog for the event that does well at both, but it would be like requiring a dog to do both vertical and big air to compete! What a Face

There aren't a whole lot in MI, but they are out there. A good idea is to regularly check the SkyHoundz website. They have a calendar listing for local events. Most are in the spring and summer, with a handful in the fall.

As of now, you're VERY unlikely to find any more in MI for the rest of the year. Events will likely start back up again around April.

Another good resource is k9disc.com, which has a forum where events are occasionally posted.

Most of the events in MI are either going to be SkyHoundz events, or those hosted by the MI Disc Dog club. MI DD has a Yahoo email list, I can get you the link to sign up for that if you want. They tend to post announcements for all upcoming MI events. They'd probably be your best bet for event info/announcements. It's become rare that MI events are posted or talked about on k9disc, for whatever reason.

I have to agree with Sara on the SkyHoundz format. If you're already doing T&F, why do it twice just so you can also do Freestyle? I prefer events where they are judged separately. Not saying I avoid SkyHoundz events or anything because of it (as my dogs can do both or either just as well), but I still would prefer they be two separate events, judged and placed separately.

The only time it makes sense to me to combine and require both are at large championship events like Purina IDC, so each team has to show they are capable of both (of course, they only do two throws for that... but you get the point).

Certain orgs have different rules regarding discs you can use, etc. as well... and some prefer some over others because of that too.

Oh, if you've never done freestyle (ahem Golly Gee! ) could you just make up something simple and go out to mess around just so that you'd get a turn for toss and fetch? I realize I have all year to work on a freestyle routine if I wanted....but, I don't know...I'm not too keen on freestyle.

Most events have both T&F and Freestyle... separate. You don't have to do FS in order to do T&F. However, there is a T&F round for those who enter in FS. Hence my prior comment about having to do T&F twice if you want to enter both. If that makes sense?

So, you can enter *just* T&F... but if you enter FS, there is a separate T&F round included in that. If you just enter T&F, you don't have to also do FS.
